surf's up! (well, it was)

So I found something really cool a while ago but NASA made me promise not to tell anyone!! It was totally hard keeping a secret from all my friends, but I didn't want NASA to get mad at me, so I didn't even put it in a friends-only entry. But now I can tell you what I found!

It turns out that some of those rocks I found actually developed in a shallow salty sea. (Here's some pictures.) I'm actually driving over what used to be a beach! Wish there were some cute space probes here who would take a drive with me!

So not only did I find evidence of water, I found evidence of a sea!! Go me! (How do you like them apples, sis?)

Saw in the paper you had a slippery start, hon. Glad to hear you're driving out and about!

Here's hoping you find some seashells (or the Martian equivalent)!

JOhn.

Point-Counterpoint

POINT:

The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. From it we have learned most of what we know. Recently, we have waded a little out to sea, enough to dampen our toes or, at most, wet our ankles. The water seems inviting. The ocean calls. Some part of our being knows this is from where we came. We long to return. These aspirations are not, I think, irreverent, although they may trouble whatever gods may be.
--Carl Sagan

COUNTERPOINT:

We shall never cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
--T. S. Eliot

Oh that is so great! First breaking the traveling record, and now finding a major discovery! Congratulations!

If you hold up one of the rocks to your sensors, do you hear the ocean?

Congratulations!

Crab! Go find us a crab. And not those silly "crab stick" things, or we'll know you're faking the evidence! =:o}

Making it seem more likely that at one time, Mars was a hospitable environment for living beings not too dissimilar from us in general composition. (Appearance is something else entirely, but in the basic generalities...)

Congrats! Good find! :-D

the environment at the time the rocks were forming could have been a salt flat, or playa

a playa! like at burning man! :)

d00d! We gotta get tickets for the rovers somehow - I mean, with this year's theme being "Vault of Heaven," they'd be a perfect fit!

Woo-Hoo!

Way to go. I'll bet you knew that as soon as you woke up in the crater... isn't peer review annoying? :)

Wow, a beach! This is very exciting. If it gets hot, wear your flip-flops on the sand so you don't burn your wheels. Also remember that alcohol does not help you stay hydrated.

Must say, it was kinda weird hearing Sean O'Keefe refer to you as an "it." Didn't he get the memo about your gender? I mean, jeez!

(And dear god. An example of how my mind works... for some reason, the title of this post made me ponder Opportunity having outfitted herself with hydraulics on all six wheels, tinted glass, a hot pink paint job with green flamework on the sides, "spinner" rims, and a car horn that plays the instrumental from "Low Rider"...)

Life's a beach on Mars, huh?

A beach! and just in time for Spring Break. (Well, it's spring here; I'm not sure about where you are. But it's the principle of the thing.) Bet you left your bikini at home though. :-(

Seriously: congratulations on a wonderful find! Woohoo!
